Google Translate gets Gemini support for more accurate translations

Google has started rolling out an update to its Translate app that will use its Gemini AI model for more accurate translations. As reported by 9to5Google, the new option appears as a toggle where the user can choose between Fast or Advanced mode.

Fast mode is optimized for speed, while Advanced "specializes in accuracy thanks to Gemini." The feature is currently available to a select number of users on iOS and only supports translation between English, French, and Spanish.

Engadget journalists tested the new model on an excerpt from Moliere's play The Misanthrope. In normal mode, the translation turned out to be literal, but inaccurate, while Gemini mode offered a stylistically correct interpretation, closer to the original.

Although Advanced mode is slower, it provides more contextual translation. For complex texts, Google recommends using the Gemini app directly, as it can also explain the meaning of individual phrases. The company warns that the AI can still make mistakes or generate incorrect interpretations.
