Windows 11 now supports third-party Passkey managers

Microsoft has announced expanded support for Passkey managers in Windows 11, making the password-less login system more flexible and secure.

Users can now choose between Microsoft Password Manager or third-party solutions. The first partners are 1Password and Bitwarden. The feature will be available after the November 2025 security update.

Passkeys allow you to sign in to services without a password, via Windows Hello, using your face, fingerprint, or PIN. All data is stored locally or in a selected manager, and synchronization between devices occurs through a secure environment.

Microsoft has integrated its own Password Manager directly into Windows, allowing you to create and use login keys not only in the Edge browser, but also in any applications that support Passkey. The storage is hardware-protected, using Azure Confidential Compute and Managed Hardware Security Modules, and access to the keys is only possible after authentication via Windows Hello.

1Password and Bitwarden noted that the new Windows 11 plugin API paves the way for a unified standard for storing and using Passkeys, which could become the basis for the future of passwordless authentication.
